I like camping and hiking. I love to cook, its my main creative outlet. I like good food and wine, particularly when hanging out at home or out with friends. I play soccer; and for those who care, I used to play midfield, but these days (older and slower) I play sweeper ;) I have a well-developed sense of humor that runs towards dark comedy: I love movies like Office Space, the Royal Tanenbaums, Clerks I'm a big fan of the Daily show (moderate democrat politically) and the Colbert Report. Other than those two shows, I don t really have any _must watch_ shows - actually I left one out - the new BSG on sci-fi. I've got a geeky side (sci-fi, video games, the aforementioned BSG must-watch), but whadya want, I'm a scientist. I love going to the theater (no musicals!). I read voraciously, fiction and non-fiction, and I'm always interested in learning something new. I've got two dogs (relatively big dogs (see pics) and those girls are great - obviously, you should like dogs too.

I like traveling, but haven't had too many opportunities to do so (being a poor graduate student for pretty much all of my 20's). I've been to Hawaii a number of times (being an oceanographer really helps in the Hawaii dept.) but that's about as exotic a destination I've managed so far. I would really love to travel around Europe (Spain, France, Italy on the must see list) and I've got a few good friends from the graduate school days scattered around those countries. (UPDATE!) Since I wrote that paragraph (over a year ago!) I've been to Japan twice, and England once. My job is the best!

I'm a scientist, or more precisely, an oceanographer. After a short eternity in school (undergrad, masters, doctoral) I got a job working at Oregon state university as a postdoctoral researcher. Oregon was cool, but the job was temporary and so eventually I moved over to the east-coast. I now work at a big lab in the area, and while its not as pretty as Oregon around here, I love being back in civilization. I also like the fact it doesn't rain 7 months straight. I absolutely love my job. I do go to sea alot. Also, I have dogs. Yay for dogs.

A) I love books - particularly sci-fi but I read non-fiction and other fiction as well. My current favorite author is Neal Stephenson (Cryptonomicon, System of the World, Snowcrash..) The guy is amazing. In the non-fiction world my latest favorite was "Soul of a Chef"

B) Movies - how can one pick a favorite movie? Maybe I can pick a single favorite from each genre, but even that would be tough. Ok, first off, given my evil dark humor sensibilities, I love movies like Rushmore, Life Aquatic (especially given that I'm an oceanographer), Royal Tannanbuams, etc. Not that I don't like slapsticks too (Dodgeball, Zoolander). Generally speaking, I'm a comedy guy. However, some other favorites: The professional (Leon), Glengary Glenross, A clockwork orange, Fight club, Vanilla sky (a good tom cruise movie?!). I'm really looking forward to '300'. [update - I was looking forward to the movie, mostly because of the trailers. Well it sucked. I didn't even see it - It was obvious it sucked from the reviews. I'll probably rent it on netflixs. ed.] Most mind-numbingly depressing yet awesome movie: Requiem for a dream.

C) Music - rock n' roll. Spin up my I-pod: some favorites: White stripes, the strokes, black rebel motorcycle club, the black keys, beck, vast, kasabian, wolfmother, arctic monkeys, clearlake, Lush, Nine Black Alps, the killers, the hives, much classic rock, and always, always always on the list, Jimi Hendrix.

D) I love foods - I love to cook, and I'm pretty good. A few years ago I was really into making haute cuisine but I no longer have the time or the density of friends (since I moved) to really do that much any more (just try to make a small amount of anything complex).
